Extreme Zoology

We are emerging from a pandemic caused by a virus that jumped from wildlife to humans (and back again). Biodiversity is crashing before our eyes, amidst weather events that swing us from cities without a drop of water to uncontrollable floods. At the same time, we are in a time of fantastic technology that allows us to study everything from the soundscape of an ecosystem to an organism’s entire metagenome.

The 2023 conference of the Zoological Society of Southern Africa asks, What are zoologists doing in this age of extremes? More importantly, what should we be doing? In line with the theme, we will discuss topics ranging from big data in zoology to urban ecology and ecosystem resilience. We hope to see you there!
